Coverage and Roaming
General
- Can I bring my phone with me when I travel?
-
Yes. Vidéotron has roaming agreements with partners in over 180 countries. Visit the Coverage and roaming section to check the compatibility of frequencies as well as Vidéotron agreements in the hosting country.
- Why do I need to check my phone's frequencies before I leave?
-
GSM networks use different frequencies throughout the world. Most networks use either 900 or 1800 MHz, or both. In Canada and the US, the majority of networks, including Vidéotron, use different frequencies: 850 and 1900 MHz. It is important to know if your wireless device is compatible with one of the frequencies used in the hosting country.
- How do I make a call with my wireless phone when I am abroad?
-
For local calls, dial the area code if there is one, then the number. To make calls to Canada or the US, press and hold the "0" until the "+" symbol appears. Then dial "1", the area code and the number. For all other countries, press and hold the "0" until the "+" symbol appears, then dial the country code, the area code and the number.
- What does the "+" symbol mean in international calls?
-
Whether you're in Canada or abroad, the country code, area code and phone number must be preceded by the international access code. In Canada and the US, it's 011. In the UK, it's 00. In Hong Kong, it's 01. There are almost as many international codes as there are countries. The "+" symbol replaces the international code and lets you avoid having to memorize the code of the country you are visiting.
- Does call display work in the US and abroad?
-
In the US, the number of the person trying to reach you is displayed most of the time. It rarely appears when abroad. If it is displayed, is it under international dialling format which allows you to call the person back without having to dial the entire sequence again.
- Can I use text messaging when in the US or abroad?
-
Absolutely. In the US, messaging works in the same way as in your local coverage area. In the rest of the world, just add the "+" symbol and the country code before dialing the mobile number. A Montréal number would look like this: +1514xxxxxxx.
- Can I send a multimedia message when I am abroad?
-
Yes, if your recipient uses a Canadian wireless network. All users of the Canadian wireless network can exchange multimedia messages.
- Do I have Internet access when I am outside Canada?
-
In the US, you can access the Internet from almost anywhere. You have Internet access in over 80 countries. Consult the Coverage and roaming section to verify the access to the service at your destination as well as the rates. GPRS data transmission services are offered according to the carrier in the country in which GPRS travelling is possible. This means that to access the GPRS services, you must select a carrier from your wireless phone. Vidéotron recommends that you manually select a network when there are more than one GPRS service providers in the same area (consult your phone's User Guide for more information). This will allow you to save on travel charges on GPRS networks.
- Are my calls automatically directed to my wireless phone when I'm outside Canada?
-
Yes. Unless you have not activated call forwarding, all your calls are automatically directed to your wireless phone when you are outside Canada. You will be reachable anywhere in the GSM coverage area where your phone is compatible with the frequency of the hosting country.
