Internet glossary
Megabits per second (Mbps), kilobits per second (Kbps)
These units indicate the theoretical data transfer speed between the Internet and your computer. They correspond to the number of units of information (bits) transferred each second, measured in thousands (Kbps) or millions (Mbps).
For example, a speed of 10 Mbps lets you download approximately one minute of MP3 music, one full-screen digital photo, or a 500-page text each second.
Transfer capacity
Transfer capacity is the maximum quantity of data your Internet access allows you to download (from the Internet to your computer), upload (from your computer to the Internet), or combined (in both directions) each month. This capacity is measured in gigabytes, or billions of bytes (GB).
For example, a capacity of 30 GB lets you transfer, each month, approximately 6,000 MP3 songs or full-screen digital photos of 5 MB each, or 40 movies of 700 MB each.
Videotron imposes these limits to prevent abuse. Our transfer capacities are calculated according to typical Internet usage.
Gigabyte (GB)
The transfer capacity over an Internet path is measured in gigabytes. A gigabyte represents a storage capacity of approximately one billion bytes, or 1,024 megabytes.
Download and upload
A download is a transfer from the Internet to your computer (for example, when you surf the web or download a file).
An upload is a transfer from your computer to the Internet (for example, when you send an email).
The average web user typically downloads more than he or she uploads.
